Saugus Iron Works Teacher Workshop

Hard History Project: A Professional Learning Community

Highlights from an in-person workshop that took place on June 21, 2024 at Saugus Iron Works in Saugus, MA.

The primary goal of Hard History Project: A Professional Learning Community is to incorporate multiple narratives into classroom and park education programming. This project launched a six-month “professional learning community” (PLC) where classroom teachers worked alongside educators, staff from The Hard History Project, and National Park Service educators to co-create new education programs and teacher and student learning materials. Programs and materials used natural and cultural resources at the park to engage audiences with the region’s history. Participating teachers were prepared to interpret history and teach curriculum frameworks in comprehensive ways. Essex Heritage helped with the in-person workshop held on June 21.
