Moving away from the traditional narrative of the Revolutionary War
Highlights from an in-person workshop that took place on April 6, 2024 at St. John’s Preparatory School in Danvers, MA
Essex Heritage hosted an in-person event at St. John’s Prep, Danvers on Saturday, April 6, 2024. Using stories and primary sources from institutions throughout Essex County, local educators, historians and scholars helped us reexamine the American Revolution through multiple local lenses.
This session explored many questions about this history and its relevance today, including:
- What is the current interpretation of the American Revolution in our regional public history and educational programming?
- What are the stories related to these topics that our institutions are not telling?
- How has commemoration of the American Revolution celebrated and perpetuated traditional narratives about the Revolution in our area? How has it invited us to consider other narratives?
- What strategies can we use to teach and interpret a more comprehensive narrative, especially as we approach the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution?
The panel discussion from the workshop was recorded. View here.
