Order of Arrangements for the Reception of the President, Andover 1833

This program details the agenda for a presidential visit to Andover in 1833. U.S. President Andrew Jackson and Vice President Martin Van Buren had stayed at the Mansion House at Phillips Academy in Andover on July 1, 1833, while traveling between Lowell and Cambridge. At the end of the trip, President Jackson would receive an Honorary Degree of Law from Harvard University. The trip was planned as an attempt to gather support in New England, where the U.S. President was greatly unpopular. In Andover, a parade featured local dignitaries and school children and led to a speech by President Jackson. This document details the schedule for the day’s events.
