Documents Relating to I-495, Haverhill-Merrimac 1964-1965

This set of documents from NARA details the building of Rte. 495 in Essex County. Two photos show the construction of the northern portion of the road that runs between Haverhill and Merrimac. The news release details the path of interstate 494 through other nearby towns, including Amesbury, Salisbury, and Lawrence.

The State Department of Public Works is advertising for bids for the construction of an additional 2.5 miles of Interstate Highway 495 in Amesbury, it was announced today.

The announcement was made at the official ceremonies opening of ? mile section of I-495 and the connector to Route 125 in Haverhill this morning.

The new section to be advertised, expected to cost nearly [$?,000,000], will extend from Hunt Road in Amesbury to the Salisbury ? ? less than half a mile, including the interchange with ? 95 in Salisbury, remains to be put up for construction ? to complete the northern portion of I-495 from Salisbury to ? ?, the Worcester Turnpike at Westborough.

In his remarks at the dedication, Governor Peabody said that the ? timetable would make expressway travel possible from ? Road in Haverhill to Route 111 in Boxborough via the ? ? Lawrence by-pass by the end of this year. He also said ? ? would also be possible from Boxboro to Route 9 by the ? ? ? ? or early next year — 55 miles of express highway ? Haverhill to Westboro
