  Using ESSEX History examines local history at its best when we look at Salem and the China Trade with Salem State 's Dr. Dane Morrison.  Dr. Morrison will lead us through a discussion of the economic and maritime history of Salem during the China Trade and the ways in which this vast trading network affected the economy and culture of Essex County. This seminar will take place at The House of The Seven Gables - a stone's throw from historic Derby Wharf, the center of the China Trade. In the afternoon, teachers will be introduced to some of the Peabody Essex Museum 's vast collections of China Trade artifacts.

  • Salem State College
• Dr. Morrison is a Professor of History at Salem State College.  He has published extensively on colonial New England , Native American, and Economic History.  In 2004 he co-edited a collection of essays entitled Salem: Place, Myth, Memory with fellow Salem State Professor Nancy Schultz.

Follow US Rt. 1 North or Rt. 95 North to Rt. 128 North. Take exit 25A (Rt. 114 East). Follow Rt. 114 East into Salem. When Rt. 114 turns left onto Norman Street, continue straight ahead onto New Derby Street. New Derby Street becomes Derby Street. The House of the Seven Gables is on the right. Complimentary parking is available during your tour.
