  • Time:9AM - 3PM
  • Address and Directions

Join us as we welcome renowned Essex County historian Dr. Daniel Vickers for our discussion of “The Fishing Industry in Essex County.” Using portions of Vickers’ book Farmers and Fisherman: Two Centuries of Work in Essex County, Massachusetts 1630-1850, this seminar will explore the industry as it developed from its small-scale colonial roots into the life-blood of many Essex County cities and towns. Because the industry was so vital to coastal Essex County, this seminar will also examine its influence on the social, economic, and cultural development of the area. The site for this seminar, the Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center, is the perfect location for this examination of the fishing industry. Teachers will be introduced to exhibits and activities that exemplify the process and impact of fishing, including a sail in an historic fishing vessel.
